Nicole Edling and Aspire Sports Medicine

Nicole Edling is the owner and head athletic trainer of Aspire Sports Medicine. Originally from Norristown, PA, Edling relocated with her family at a young age to the very small town of Wyalusing, PA. Growing up, she often watched Philadelphia Eagles and Flyers games with her father, who is an avid sports fan. Edling was also a gymnast for 13 years, which led to her interest and motivation to pursue education and a future career in personal training.

As a thorough person, Edling wanted to understand all aspects of an athlete. She earned an Associate’s degree in Physical Fitness Specialist studies and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science. She explains, “After my Bachelor of Science degree, I was able to see injuries and the biomedical aspects of the body, I felt like it was my calling.” Edling most recently completed her Master’s degree in Clinical Athletic Training from Bloomsberg University. These degrees all “go hand in hand,” which has given Edling an understanding of how to train athletes and the ability to treat athletes properly upon injuries.

Throughout her college career, she gained work experience serving and also began personal training at privately owned gyms. Edling was doing athletic training as part of a clinical for her Master’s degree at an offensive linesmen camp of Jahri Evans of the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. It was here that she met Julius King who was at the camp doing strength and conditioning. King was employed with the Philadelphia Revolution ice hockey team in Warwick, PA at the time, and he is still employed there today. Upon meeting at Jahri Evans’ camp, King recruited Edling to work with him and the Philadelphia Revolution. Edling moved on to work with this organization “the day of graduation” and has been handling the athletic training for the Revolution since approximately August of 2010.

Edling was self-employed and working as a subcontractor at various camps and organizations, and through referrals she was asked to cover a lot. Due to the increasing interest and demand for work, Edling made the decision to hire and to establish her own organization, Aspire Sports Medicine. Their licensed athletic trainers provide proper medical care to athletes during camps, clinics, practices, and games in the Greater Philadelphia Area.

Edling says, “My favorite aspects of my career are the interaction I get with some of the athletes. They are some of the hardest working people I have ever met. I know through my experience with gymnastics that it is a constant battle to perform at your highest ability. All of the best memories and most rewarding experiences are a simple ‘thank you’ from a coach, athlete, or their parents. There are some very scary circumstances that can happen out there on the field. I am just glad to put people at ease once they realize I am doing everything in my ability to care for their child, friend, or athlete.”

In sports, when a major injury or catastrophic incident occurs, the most important aspects are in reactionary time. As licensed athletic trainers, Edling and her staff are able to perform the necessary assessment and evaluation to immediately react and to save lives. It is important to have the appropriately trained staff available at sporting events to ensure that the athletes can be safe in the event of an emergency or incident that requires immediate attention.

Edling and her organization currently work with the Philadelphia Revolution ice hockey team, the Lady Patriots ice hockey team, Saint Basil Academy, Saint Hubert Academy, Abington Junior High School, and various camps and programs. They will also be running Impact Testing, which will be open to the public. All are invited to contact Edling and her staff to set up an appointment.

Edling and her staff follow a four to five day protocol for progressive return to play to ensure that the athlete is symptom free when performing physical activities, for example riding a stationary bike and being monitored for any symptoms following the workout. Players who are injured should feel comfortable and encouraged to seek athletic trainers such as Edling to assist the athlete in proper treatment. This will allow the athlete to reach their maximum potential in good health and be successful in their game.

Please contact Nicole Edling at Aspire Sports Medicine to request athletic training services.

“Don’t take chances, keep your athletes safe!”

The Philadelphia Revolution Organization

The Philadelphia Revolution are a Tier III Junior A hockey team in the south division of the Eastern Junior Hockey League. They joined the EJHL as an expansion team in the 2009-10 season, and the Revolution also field teams at the Junior B level in the Empire Junior Hockey League and Eastern States Hockey League. Home games are played at the Rink at Warwick in Warminster, PA. The Revolution find success as an organization with great support from the staff top to bottom.

Chris Kanaly brings a wealth of experience in both hockey and business to the organization. Kanaly is the general manager of the Revolution, and previously spent time over three seasons as coach and assistant to both the EJHL and Empire teams. Kanaly is the owner and head goaltending instructor of Kanaly Goaltending Training located in Southampton, NJ, one of the largest goaltending schools in the state. He is the goaltending coach for the Trenton Titans of the ECHL and has worked with various teams including the Toms River Blackhawks, Southern Regional High School, Admirals, Riptide, and Warwick Wildcats. Kanaly played collegiately as a net minder at Hofstra University in Long Island, NY for four years in the ACHA setting various goaltending records for the institution. Kanaly earned his degree in economics at Hofstra and went on to work on Wall Street. His knowledge and skills enable him to lead and support the Revolution organization and to set the teams up for a successful future.

James Laux is the head coach of the EJ Revolution team. He grew up locally in Cherry Hill, NJ, began playing hockey at a young age, and played until age 25. Laux had a career as a defenseman playing junior in Western Canada before a brief professional career with the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL and in the ECHL with the Wheeling Nailers and the Utah Grizzlies. Laux worked in the past as a gym teacher at a school for Autistic students. He then spent three seasons as coach of the Empire Revolution team before becoming the EJ head coach. Laux wants the Revolution to win the EJHL league and to have all of his last year players committed to the colleges of their choice.

Mark Catron has taken over as the Empire Revolution head coach. Catron was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. He was drafted into the OHL by the Kitchener Rangers and then played in the QMJHL with the Plattsburgh Pioneers. Catron played with the Virginia Lancers in the ACHL and played in eight exhibition games for the NJ Devils of the NHL. His playing career then took him to Holland and Germany. Catron worked in coaching with the Seguin Bruins of the OPJHL, helped to rebuild the U-18 AAA Indiana Ice, and he worked with the USHL team as a skills coach and scout. He is the President and CEO of Player’s Edge Hockey Schools, which offers camps and clinics for ice hockey. Catron believes this is a new era with the Revolution organization, and it is exciting for all levels. The whole organization has seen changes, and with all of the other great coaches in place and the quality players in the organization, he thinks the fans should be excited to see hard-working and more disciplined teams at all levels.

Justin Grevious is from Muskegon, MI and played defense until age 12 when he then switched to goaltending. Grevious has coached in the past with his alma mater in Michigan as an assistant where the team was State runner-ups in back-to-back seasons. He began coaching at Kanaly Goaltender Training before being brought in to work with the Revolution. Grevious took over coaching the ESHL Revolution team before the end of last season, and he brought experience and a blue collar work ethic with constructive leadership to a team that struggled last season with a 2-33 record. With the changes thus far, this season’s team has continued to work hard and show more discipline.

Artem Gumenyuk is the skating coach with the Revolution. Gumenyuk is from Kharkov, Ukraine and brings professional and playing experience to his role with the Revolution. He spent two years as a starting defenseman playing for Division I prep school at South Kent, CT, was Second All-Tournament Team defenseman at the Beantown Classic Tournament in Boston, MA in 2008, and was a member of the Ukrainian National teams at the World Champtionships (U-17, U18, and U20). Gumenyuk spent four years as a starting defenseman at Manhattanville College in NY playing Division III. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Finance and Sociology while making the Dean’s List. He has worked in the past as an assistant with the Old York Raiders. Gumenyuk is happy to be part of the Revolution team, and he is looking forward to being more involved working with the team more moving forward. Gumenyuk explains that the organization takes care of the players to make sure they have a place to go and to ensure a bright future after their playing career with the Revolution is complete.

The support continues off the ice with Julius King and All Fitness Customized Training. King is the owner of All Fitness and handles the sports performance training for the Revolution teams, as well as the Lady Patriots, Wildcats, and individual clients including Jahri Evans of the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. King grew up in north Philadelphia, PA and graduated from Bloomsburg University with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science with an Athletic Training focus and a Master’s degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in Exercise Physiology. King works with the athletes teaching them how to move more efficiently and how to be healthier. He shares, “A lot of times, people defeat themselves by saying what they can’t accomplish or having negative energy. They need to get the ‘I can’t’ factor out of their head. Everyone needs to buy into the system. It is achievable if you think it is. Giving 100% effort is the same as winning.”

Nicole Edling is the owner and head athletic trainer of Aspire Sports Medicine. She is originally from Norristown, PA and was a gymnast for 13 years. Edling earned an Associate’s degree in Physical Fitness Specialist Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science before completing her Master’s degree in Clinical Athletic Training from Bloomsberg University. This extensive education gives Edling an understanding of how to train athletes and the ability to treat athletes properly upon injury. Edling worked previously as a personal trainer. In sports, when a major injury or catastrophic incident occurs, reactionary time is critical. As licensed athletic trainers, Edling and her staff are able to perform necessary assessment and evaluation to immediately react and to save lives. This support ensures the athletes can be safe in the event of an emergency or incident that requires immediate attention. Aspire works with the Revolution, the Lady Patriots, Saint Basil Academy, Saint Hubert Academy, Abington Junior High School, and various other camps and programs. They also run ImPACT Testing, which is open to the public, to determine if athletes are suffering from concussions.

Team owners, Phil Pulley and Devra Schorr-Pulley have put the support in place needed for the organization to run smoothly and find success. Kanaly agrees, “Working for a first class ownership group is what any GM in this league would want. Having the tools and support to build and develop young talent in the Philadelphia area is a special gift.”

ImPACT Testing – Open to Public by Appointment

Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing, known as ImPACT testing, is valid, reliable, and safe. It is the first and most commonly used concussion evaluation system, and has been the most scientifically validated as well. The system was co-founded by Dr. Mark Lovell, Dr. Joseph Maroon, and Dr. Micky Collins. ImPACT testing assists with the comprehensive clinical management of concussions for athletes who range from the age of 10 through to adult athletes.

ImPACT uses computerized neurocognitive assessment tools that medical doctors, athletic trainers, psychologists, and other licensed healthcare professionals can utilize to determine whether an athlete is able to return to play after suffering from a concussion. Tests include evaluating the athlete’s reaction time, memory, and speed. These baseline tests with ImPACT are given to all athletes before they can return to play. Athletes are given post-concussion ImPACT tests when they are suffer from a head injury, and the results from the tests are then compared. This allows for more in-depth evaluation than an initial concussion assessment.

There are many complexities and risks involved with concussions, which is why it is beneficial to manage concussions individually and to use baseline testing and neurocognitive testing. Using neurocognitive assessments can allow for a concussed athlete to be objectively and properly evaluated on their condition after the injury while also monitoring the athlete’s recovery to ensure a safe and successful recovery and return to play.

For more information regarding the ImPACT Test, please visit their website at www.impacttest.com.

ImPACT testing will be available in August and will be open to the public. All are invited to contact Aspire Sports Medicine to set up an appointment. The Philadelphia Revolution teams will be contacted directly with ImPACT testing schedules by their team managers upon appointment.

To make an appointment for ImPACT testing or for athletic training services, please contact Nicole Edling at Aspire Sports Medicine.
